Incompetent DFO, once again.
Montreal Gazette, April 18, 2006 FISHERIES DEPARTMENT BLAMED FOR SLAUGHTER Millions of salmon - Approval of gravel road created mass grave: report Scott Simpson Canwest News Service Vancouver - The smell of the dead fish reached Aaron Salt's nose even before his hands could delve deep enough into the gravel to uncover their corpses. On the morning of March 4, Salt and a group of fellow students had set out on a trip to collect photos for a visual essay on British Columbia's Fraser River, their contribution to an open house for the B.. Institute of Technology fish and wildlife program. But what they found instead was a catastrophic fish kill that claimed the lives of between 1.5 million and 2.25 million baby pink salmon. A report on the disaster, co-authored by the students, their instructors and the Fraser Valley Salmon Society, will go into general release today. The report is expected to ignite a controversy focusing directly on the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, which authorized a short-term gravel mining operation immediately adjacent to an area that contains some of the most productive spawning habitat on Canada's most significant salmon river. The report describes how upstream, to the right of the students, was a temporary gravel road slicing out across the bed of the Fraser, serving as a causeway for trucks moving gravel out of a mining operation on an island in the middle of the river. The causeway had shut off the flow of the river and left high and dry a spawning area several hectares in size. The exposed gravel surface was pockmarked with about 6,500 nest depressions that served now as the grave markers for millions of salmon who were in the most delicate stage of their tenuous life cycle. Only two yers ago, the federal Fisheries Department lifted a moratorium banning gravel mining on the Fraser, over the objections of conservation and sport fishing groups who feared industrial operations in the bed of the world's most significant salmon river would be harmful to fish. The department is currently conducting a review of the situation. |

Hi Joseph,
Since the discovery of the baby salmon found dead by the river, is it going to help save the baby seals in anyway? I was checking out a website yesterday on Costco selling seal oil capsules to the public. The Sea Shephard Organization put so much pressure on them not to sell the oil anymore, they finally gave in and stopped selling the oil. Joseph, could you help to get the word out about Exxon and Mobil Oil companies being connected to Canada. Tell them not to buy gas from either company. They are the most powerful companies. Thank you for keeping everyone informed! Carolyn |

hi carolyn,
unfortunately in a land where all propaganda is based on lies the seals are even blamed for the salmon killed by the fisheries department. my view is that ottawa is like the genie in a bottle, it grants your wishes, good or bad. in the Atlantic region, the dfo has become the it and all of federal subsidies. money for sealing processing plants, fish processing, training fishermen, building ships, and an endless creation of federal jobs to oversee these projects, whether needed, wise, destructive or plain assinine. this flow of federal money has poisoned the Oceans, society and politics of this region. seasonal make work jobs like sealing, fishing, processing, anything to earn enough to spend the rest of the year collecting your unemployment check. creating a society of loosers dependent on the feds for their survival, useless communities that survive only in bed with the dfo, the dfo growing by prostituting itself to this public. any project is good from the local point of view as long as it creates another subsidized seasonal job. the whole manipulated by lies and propaganda that poisons all of society. the Oceans are being destroyed by factory trawlers that no one mentions, it's easier to blame the seals. a society stuck in a 16th century mentality, destroying the Oceans life, no animal on Earth is lower than a sealer. when you see a reptile, vulture, insect or anything living on a tv show, compare it to a sealer and you will see how i came to that conclusion. |

Hi Joseph,
Did you know that Costco is selling seal oil capsules again after Sea Shepard pressured them to remove all seal oil capsules from the shelves. As of April 4th they are restocking the shelves and selling the capsules. WE NEED TO BOYCOTT COSTCO! If you have any other ideas please let us know. I can't stand to go through this another year. Thanks! Carolyn |

hi Carolyn,
when i think of what this is already costing canada, it's hard to imagine what it will take to get them to sober up. their government is always complaining that they can't resolve any dispute with the US anymore. the canadians always had their political ennemies in the US, mostly Southern politicians, who oposed anything canadian. today they have lost so many friends and so many American politicians don't even want to hear about canada that they have no effective good will left. the loss of political and economic good will worldwide does hurt them, but the rise in oil prices allows ottawa to use energy money to create government jobs to replace lost private sector jobs. and their propaganda machine does the rest. we must just keep pilling the straws untill the proverbial camel's back breaks, whatever it takes. their political system is already distabled, lets just keep kiking their hopeless political institutions in the teeth, almost sounds like a canadian idea. if slavery, segregation, the KKK, Apartheid and the Soviet Union could become history, we must hit them untill sealing becomes history, whatever the cost. i only feel sorry for the seals, to hell with canadain institutions. these are not typos, i no longer capitalize canada, ottawa, the dfo or any obsenity having to do with the slaughter of seals, they don't deserve any respect. joseph |
